The Peace Arch is a monument situated on the Canada United States border between the communities of Blaine, Washington and Surrey, British Columbia. The Peace Arch, which stands 20.5 meters (67.2 ft) tall, was built by Sam Hill and dedicated in September 1921, and commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Ghent in 1814. We made a quick stop in Ghent, Belgium to satisfy our geeky urges to see... well Ghent! This is where the creatively named titled Treaty of Ghent was signed ending the War of 1812 (affecting Mackinac Island pretty heavily). Due to the slow data transfer rate across the Atlantic at the time the War didn't really end in our hemisphere till much later. (like how I tied in modern terminology with history? pretty cool huh?) ...
